McCullum injures arm, blazes half-century

Black Caps skipper could face anxious wait after receiving blow during whirlwind knock

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has copped a nasty blow to the left forearm from Mitchell Johnson in his side’s run chase against Australia in Auckland.

Unbeaten on 22 from eight deliveries, McCullum looked to evade a 147kph short-of-a-length delivery from Johnson in the third over of the innings, but the ball struck him flush on an unprotected section of his arm.

After receiving treatment from Black Caps medical stuff, the opener opted to bat on, edging the next delivery for four before charging Johnson unsuccessfully to complete the over.

The affected area swelled up immediately

At the completion of the following over, he added an arm guard to the affected area.

With the Kiwis chasing 152 to win, McCullum led the charge, blasting a 21-ball 50 to continue the devastating form that saw him blaze the fastest half-century in World Cup history against England last Friday.

He was out moments later, picking out Mitchell Starc at mid off from the bowling of Pat Cummins.

The 33-year-old has received high praise for his leadership of a red-hot New Zealand team that, after beating Sri Lanka, Scotland and England, skittled Australia for 151 at Eden Park.
