Stoinis the latest to make ODI debut

Victorian allrounder joins Joe Burns and Ashton Agar in making his ODI debut on UK tour

Marcus Stoinis will become Australia’s 209th one-day international player today when he takes the field against England at Headingley.

LIVE: Scores and highlights from the fourth ODI

Stoinis made his T20 international debut last month against England in Cardiff, and is the third player on the tour to play his maiden ODI after Joe Burns and Ashton Agar.

The strapping allrounder had a baptism of fire in his first match in the green and gold of his country.

Entering Australia’s chase in the 18th over needing 22 from 14 balls, Stoinis managed 10 from eight deliveries but was involved in a crucial run out of wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade as the tourists fell five runs short.

Captain Steve Smith said that the 26-year-old would be better for that experience.

"Anytime you’re in those situations it’s tough," Smith said. "It’s his first game and he came in and needed over 10 an over.

"It was difficult circumstances and he’ll be better for the run.

"I’m sure he was a little bit nervous walking out to bat as everyone is in the first game.

"I’m sure he’ll be better for the run, that’s for sure."

Hailing from Perth, Stoinis made his first-class and one-day debut for Western Australia in 2009, and played three games for KFC Big Bash League club Perth Scorchers in BBL|02.

Inconsistent performances in the west saw the 26-year-old lose his state contract, prompting a move east to Melbourne in 2011 and a second chance with the Victorian Bushrangers.

Since then the broad-shouldered Stoinis has played in all formats for his adopted state, scoring an impressive 170 against Tasmania in March 2014, and is a key member of the Melbourne Stars this summer.

A breakthrough Sheffield Shield season last summer yielded 785 runs at 49 and earned Stoinis selection on the four-day Australia A tour of India last month, where he made 77 and claimed 2-18 in the opening match in Chennai.

A hard-hitting batsman and clever fast-medium right-armer, Stoinis was a member of Australia’s Under-19 squad alongside current Australian players Smith, James Faulkner, James Pattinson and Josh Hazlewood.
