Vics inflict record defeat on CA XI

Pattinson, Holland and Finch make light work of young guns in one-sided Matador Cup clash

After routing the Cricket Australia XI for 79 in 28 overs, Victoria Bushrangers have surged to a double bonus point victory in the opening match of their Matador BBQs One-Day Cup campaign at Hurstville Oval.

The nine-wicket win was achieved with a staggering 233 balls in hand – the largest victory in terms of deliveries remaining in the history of the domestic one-day competition.

The CA XI’s batting struggles continued against a rampaging Victorian bowling attack as they were skittled on the small suburban ground for just 20 runs more than they managed against New South Wales on Monday.

The young squad has opened their campaign against two of the strongest teams in the competition and captain Will Bosisto insists they’re better than the performances so far would suggest.

“We’re really disappointed,” the skipper told media after play. “That was far below our expectations as a group coming in.

“We’ll be looking for a much better showing, particularly with the bat against Tasmania.

“Our top order has struggled to get into the game and set a platform to score big runs later in the innings.

“There’s no point sitting around in the changerooms dwelling on today’s performance, or even Monday’s performance.

“We came up against two strong sides and we didn’t perform anywhere near to what we expect of ourselves.

“We’re look for ways to improve and get better against Tasmania (on Saturday).”

Aaron Finch guided his side home largely untroubled in just 11.1 overs to collect the bonus points along with the win.

The Australian limited-overs opener was in a dominant mood, finding the boundary on nine occasions with a series of brutal drives and horizontal-bat strokes.

Western Australia quick Matt Dixon claimed the sole wicket of Marcus Stoinis, making up for a dropped chance off the same batsman in the opening over of the innings.

Cameron White scored 14no to ensure the job was completed in routine, albeit record-breaking fashion.

While some have suggested bringing in some experienced players to guide the rising stars through the three-week tournament, Bosisto maintains the talent is already there to push the states in their remaining four matches.

“We’ve got the talent, we just haven’t performed to the best of our ability,” he said after top-scoring for the CA XI with 21 from 46 balls.

“I’ve heard people say 'do you need an experienced player in your line-up?' and I guess that would be one approach.

“But I think the whole idea of having a Cricket Australia XI in the tournament is to give 11 young guys exposure and the opportunity to see what it’s like at the next level and what we need to do to be able to perform at this level.”

Bushrangers quick James Pattinson was the chief destroyer with the ball, picking up 4-18 from 10 overs after Test quick Peter Siddle and former ODI Player of the Year Clint McKay were both left out of the XI to highlight the class of the attack the CA XI was up against.

WATCH: I knew the wickets would come: Pattinson

After being bowled out for just 59 in their opening clash on Monday, CA XI skipper Will Bosisto elected to bat on a windy morning in Sydney’s south.

The innings started poorly for the squad of emerging talent with John Hastings striking on his first ball of the day, courtesy of a loose stroke from Queensland wicketkeeper-batsman Jimmy Peirson.

The imposing bowling allrounder struck again two overs later with Cameron White taking a superb catch diving to his right at second slip to send Marcus Harris on his way for four.

Right-arm seamer Scott Boland continued the misery with a return catch from state teammate Seb Gotch, before Pattinson returned for a scintillating second spell from the Ray Lindwall End.

Combining searing pace with a rhythm that had been lacking since his latest comeback from injury earlier this year, the 25-year-old ran through the middle-order to claim 4-12 in the six-over stint that included a string of 14 dot balls with three scalps.

Pattinson empathised with the struggling opposition after consecutive record-breaking defeats.

"It is hard for a side like that who are inexperienced, and they have come up against two teams where most of the players have played for Australia,” he said after the early finish came shortly after lunch.

“It is tough for them, but it is good experience as well."

Finch had forewarned on Tuesday that the strong Victorian side wouldn’t offer their young opponents any respite.

“We’re out to win,” a defiant Finch told cricket.com.au. “It doesn’t matter who is playing.  “They’re on the opposition, so we’ll do whatever we have to to try and win the game.

“I know they didn’t get the result yesterday that they would’ve liked, but they would have learned a lot out of that playing against guys like Steve Smith.”

Jon Holland chipped in with three wickets of his own to end the innings shortly before midday.

Victoria will now prepare to take on the myFootDr Queensland Bulls at Blacktown on Friday, while the CA XI will be hoping for an improved performance against Tasmania on Saturday.
